Wayne J. GerwingDecember 17, 1948 - June 22, 2009 Beloved Husband, Father & Grandfather - Age 60
Wayne was born on December 17, 1948 to Herman & Margaret Gerwing. He was raised on his parent's dairy farm in Pierz, MN. He graduated from Father Pierz Memorial High School in 1966, and received his Bachelors Degree from St. Cloud State University in 1970. He began working for the State of MN Department of Revenue in 1973, & dedicated 33 years of service before retiring in the spring of 2006. While working for the State of MN, Wayne occasionally traveled. One trip in particular brought him to New York City, where he would meet his loving wife, Marlete. They married on September 18, 1976. Together, they raised two children, son, Shane, and daughter, Shelly. Wayne, Marlete and the kids spent 7 years living in Hudson, WI, where Wayne took great pride in restoring an old 1800’s Victorian Mansion, now known as the Phipps Inn Bed and Breakfast. They later moved to Eagan, MN for 15 years before retiring to his beloved lake home on Cross Lake in Pine City, MN. Wayne was an avid sports fan, following all MN sports teams, but most importantly were his kid’s teams, where he never missed a game. He loved to travel; he and Marlete have visited almost all the states in the U.S. and dozens of countries around the world (Germany, Greece, Israel, Egypt, just to name a few). Most recently, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is where he could be found avoiding the past several MN winters. Wayne’s biggest passion was spending time on the water fishing with his family, friends, and the catch of his life, Marlete. He dedicated his life to providing love and care to his family, always putting his kids ahead of all else. He will be remembered as a devoted and caring Husband of 33 years, Father, and “Grappa”, as well as for his strong and courageous 19 year battle with cancer. His outgoing personality, love, and kindness will be greatly missed by all his devoted friends and family. Wayne is survived by his wife, Marlete of Pine City, MN; son, Shane & wife Jennifer of Lakeville, MN; daughter, Shelly and fiancé Josh of St. Joseph, MN; granddaughters, Savannah and Julia; brothers, Dennis (Patti) of Eagan, MN, David (Lenna) of Lakewood, CO & Mark (Debra) of Little Falls, MN; & 9 nieces and nephews.
