Rev. Rudolph Charles Berndt, 61, of Iowa City died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004 at his residence of natural causes. Fr. Berndt was born in Long Prairie, Minnesota on June 17, 1943, the son of Raymond E. and Genevieve Buhl Berndt. He received his B.A. in 1964 and his MBA in 1966 from St. Cloud State University. Fr. Berndt had worked for a national public accounting firm from 1964 to 1966 and 1968 to 1971. He had also taught at Mankato State College from 1966 to 1968. Fr. Berndt attended St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, graduating in 1976. On May 15, 1976 he was ordained at St. John Vianney Church in So. St. Paul, by Bishop Gerald O'Keefe. Fr. Berndt's first assignment was to St. Paul's Church, Burlington, IA in 1976 as associate pastor, followed by assignment to St. Patrick, Iowa City. In 1985, he was assigned as pastor of St. Boniface, Clinton then to St. Mary, Riverside; St. Peter, Buffalo; St. Andrew, Blue Grass; Sts. Philip and James, Grand Mounds; St. Mary, Oxford and St. Peter, Cosgrove, IA. Fr. Berndt then served in Iowa City as a chaplain at University of Iowa Hospitals, Veterans Administration Medical Center and Mercy Hospital. Fr. Berndt established the Bishop Davis Knights of Columbus Council 12910 in Oxford and Cosgrove and served as chaplain. He was also very active in the Priest's Aid Society. He is survived by his father, Raymond of So, St. Paul; brother, Roger Berndt of San Francisco; sister, Sharon (Dr. Alan) Quam of Alexandria, MN; nieces & nephew, Jennifer, Rebecca, Erik and Sarah. He was preceded in death by his mother. Funeral InformationFuneral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 AM at CHURCH OF ST. JOHN VIANNEY, South St. Paul.
