Elizabeth A. FrejlachSeptember 19, 1914 - August 20, 2007 (nee Cheesebrow)
The sweetest most elegant LADY Elizabeth passed away holding her daughter’s hand at the age of 92 years, 11 months. She was a revered & beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, great aunt & friend to many. Preceded in death by mother, Elizabeth (died in 1926 when Elizabeth was 12 years old); father, George; 6 brothers; & 2 sisters. Elizabeth was the last member of the Cheesebrow/brough family. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Mattson Lysne & her husband, John Lysne; grandson, Scott Mattson; foster grandson, Robert; & dear nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Elizabeth worked at her sister Eva’s dress shop from 1937 to 1950. “Eva’s”, was one of the most exclusive dress shops in St. Paul. Elizabeth was written up in the St. Paul paper as being long connected with important Apparel Firms in St. Paul. She was “consistently ahead of her time in style & had an unmistakable flare for fashion and known in St. Paul for her outstanding fashion smartness & fashion-rightness!” From 1945 to 1954 she owned Frejlach’s Grocery Store on Cleveland Avenue in St. Paul, from 1954 to 1957 she owned Ran Ham Bowling Center in St. Paul, & she owned Stadium Bowl in Bloomington from 1958 to 1977, when she retired. Elizabeth cared for her beloved sister Eva daily in her Highland home from 1957 to 1964 after Eva was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She also continuously opened her exquisite home to her daughter’s friends, sometimes up to 18 kids congregated there on weekends throughout the 1960’s. Elizabeth’s Catholic faith was most important to her. She never learned to drive – therefore she would walk to St. Therese Catholic Church every Sunday & Holy Day, never missing a Mass. She made sure her daughter & grandson attended & graduated from the best Catholic schools (Cretin-Derham Hall/St. Thomas Academy). Elizabeth was an absolutely phenomenal cook, baker (she LOVED chocolate) & homemaker. She loved to entertain family & many friends. She created incredible, delicious, memorable meals which could only be outshined by her wonderful sense of humor & indefatigable, genuine concern for each of her guests. In January of 1992, at the age of 77, Elizabeth was diagnosed with “possible” Alzheimer’s disease. Her daughter promised to take care of her & assured Elizabeth that she would never be placed in a nursing home. Elizabeth sold her Highland home of 33 years & her daughter sold her home in West St. Paul. Together, in January 1993, they purchased a home in Eagan. Elizabeth loved her new location & she was absolutely the “love, heart & delight of the home.” Elizabeth was extremely grateful throughout numerous health trials & tribulations that she never needed to go to a nursing home. In August 2006, Elizabeth’s health declined to where she needed constant care & attention. Fairview in-home Hospice became involved visiting 1 hour a day, 3 times a week to assist Elizabeth’s daughter & son-in-law with cares. Please offer prayers for Elizabeth’s eternal peace & strength for her immediate family who adored her. Her 14 year, 7 month daily delightful, witty presence & loving words of wisdom in their home will be missed beyond words. Elizabeth’s family wishes to thank Dr. David L. Von Weiss, MD, “Super Duper” Linda Cooper, Ruth Pollinder, RN & Dr. Victor M. Sandler, MD. Mom – You were a beautiful life-long model of authenticity & integrity.
