Russell was born on January 11th, 1933, in Montevideo Minnesota. His mother and father were Emil and Louise Haugen. He was blessed with three older siblings Pearl, Charles and Dorothy. From a farmboy who started in a one room schoolhouse he got to travel the world and be the first in his family to get both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Russell was a Korean War veteran and served in the Navy, both active and reserve, for 36 years and retired as a Senior Chief. As an educator he worked in St. Public Schools for 25 years with needy populations in inner city schools, Totem Town, and Unitied Hospital Psych ward. In retirement, he volunteered at the Armed Services Center and the VA Home. He leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years Marcia (Lueck), older brother Charles and sister Dorothy Tollefson, son Greg (Melissa) Haugen, daughter Julie (Heath) Jones, grandchildren Nils and Berit Haugen, and many nieces and nephews. Russ passed away peacefully on October 29th after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.
